Welcome to gotomyancestry.com |
Please bear with me while in the transfer process. The site you are viewing has recently been transferered to a new hosting
provider and currently the Genealogy section is not working properly. I hope to have this fixed soon.
Thank you for your patience and please check back for updates.
I first want to say that without the work of George Pettett much of this website would be years from becoming a reality. It is his hard work and dedication in research that allows me to start without traveling the entire east coast gathering and verifying information. Not to mention some of the contributors to George's research have since passed on. I give thanks to George and credit for the hard work he has accomplished over several or more decades. I only hope to enhance in some small way what he has already accomplished.
Barbara Pettett Doody has also dedicated much of her life in the search and research of our family history. Her website at pettett.net chronicles her father’s work and information on the Pettett, Landsdown and Brashears lines of the family. I highly encourage you to visit her site.

Why are we creating this website? |
Through-out the many years from recorded history families have moved thousands of miles from their home lands and even from their relatives. In less than one to two generations vital links can and do become lost. This site is being created to serve as a repository for the accumulated research into our common ancestral lines. From the family tree link you are able to search family ancestors, descendants, relationships, personal photos, cemeteries and tombstones, dates and anniversaries and government documentation. Through the Forum link you can interact with the website and other family members by posting information, stories, ask and answer questions, or just chat back and forth with long lost relatives.
Though George Pettett has accomplished so much in the discovery of our ancestors, there is much work to be done. In the years since he published his book "Pettett and Pettit This Family Business" ©, there have been about 2 to three generations of children born. This may not seem like much and isn't in a single branch of a family tree, but when you multiply a single branch over many branches of a family tree there are hundreds of children to be updated.

Revolutionary War Joshua Pettit |
I wanted to write this article for some time now. I am getting more interest in the website by Pettit families that are descendants of Joshua Pettit of Spartanburg, South Carolina. I want to clear up how we fit in. According to many researchers it is commonly thought that our line of Pettit's starting at our known point of origin, Elijah Pettit was the son of a Benjamin Pettit who was the son of Joshua Pettit. George Pettit had researched this link but was unable to find Elijah Pettit listed as a son of Benjamin Pettit in Benjamin’s bible. Therefore, it is believed that we may be descendants of a separate Pettit son of Joshua's. Either John Pettit or possibly Nathan Pettit. The fact that we are at a standstill in determining the true direct relationship makes me hesitant to add such information to this site since I Want this site to document fact and truth.
I want to continue to invite those of you who are and can prove your direct line to Joshua Pettit, and the information on your lines of the Pettit family. However, as for the line that I am from we will hold off on determining that Joshua is indeed in the line until we can connect him to Elijah trough one of his sons. It is almost certain that we are related, but without that link I cannot go further.
I would be interested in a Pettit DNA project to determine from the known family lines which line we hail from. Also, if anyone has solid proof of a connection that information would be gratefully received. It is extremely difficult to stop a family tree line knowing that there is a connection but that you just cannot see where it leads, but like I said, if this site is to be factual then that deed needs to be done.
Having said that, there are some very well documented lines of the Pettit's from Joshua's sons, and I really want to see those lines included on this site. Thank you for your patients. Kind regards.

How you can help with the website |
- It takes many hours of work to create even the smallest portion of a website and make it look professional. I make mistakes and sometimes catch them myself, but if you see a mistake please let me know.
- Does the information provided read well? or are there improvements that can be made to the content and order in which it is presented?
